SLIFT: Ummon (Review)

PSYCH/PROG/SPACE ROCK
Consigliatissimo!

ENGLISH VERSION
Y'all know those albums that sound EXACTLY like their art cover? Well, this is one of those.
Beyond the astonishing artwork of Philippe Caza there's indeed music that melds 60's psych, 70's prog rock, with hints of grunge and punk, a bright production and modern grooves. Oh, almost forgot, there's quite a lot of crushing doomy riffs, too.
The trio from Toulouse keeps running on the sci-fi thematic track, but this time with a much-heavier approach.
Tons of reverb, chunky riffs and juicy grooves all refer to a melancholic, nostalgic feel for places in the outer space that you never explored before.
The album evolves in a jaw-dropping variety of directions, from the "straight-to-your-face" approach of the title track to the delightful psych moods of slower songs like Altitude Lake and Citadel on a Satellite. Lions, Tigers and Bears pretty much sums up all of Slint's major influences, and it's my personal favorite.
This album has heart and spirit, mostly because of an insanely good songwriting that keeps grooves and melodies central. Also, by listening to "Ummon" you can tell these guys really really seem to enjoy themselves playing.
A fresh air blast for all the (sub)genres it touches. Very recommended!
