MAMMATUS: Sparkling Waters (Review)

Confermando di essere persone ligie alla propria parola, ecco tornare a soli tre anni di distanza dal bellissimo Heady Mental i Mammatus, forse non i più famosi alfieri di quella psichedelia californiana che a noi piace tanto, ma sicuramente tra i suoi interpreti più raffinati, vista la totale assenza di banalità nelle proprie composizioni e la naturalezza con cui sono in grado di lasciare di stucco anche il più scafato tra gli aficionados del settore.
In un 2015 che sul fronte heavy psych è stato un po' parco (dove per heavy si intendono composizioni sui venti minuti di durata prevalentemente strumentali), si assumono l'ingrato compito di sfornare il loro disco in assoluto più ambizioso, e, visti i soggetti in questione, è già un bel dire.

MAMMATUS: nuovo album a novembre

Non contenti di aver già solleticato a dovere le nostre sinapsi con il loro bellissimo terzo album Heady Mental (recensione qui), l'heavy-psych trio statunitense Mammatus è pronto ad espandere nuovamente le nostre coscienze con il loro nuovo LP.

Sparkling Waters, questo il titolo, uscirà il 20 novembre per Spiritual Pajamas in CD, doppio LP e formato digitale.

HEAVY PSYCH - PROGRESSIVE - SPACE

Per una fortunata coincidenza, il 2013 ha segnato il ritorno su disco, oltre che di Earthless e di Samsara Blues Experiment, di un'altra delle band principi delle sonorità spaziali e dilatate, i Mammatus, giunti anche loro al terzo album dopo sei anni di distanza come accaduto per i loro più famosi cugini americani, giusto per rimanere nell'ambito dei grandi disegni cosmici.
Dopo aver esplorato nei primi due album atmosfere fortemente legate a paesaggi naturali, il nuovo capitolo della loro discografia segna l'inizio di un viaggio nel caleidoscopio della mente umana, intento dichiarato e deducibile sin dal titolo dell'opera, Heady Mental, e dalla sua copertina fortemente evocativa.

BIO:

Mammatus consist of three reclusive dudes who live on the fringes of Santa Cruz county. Since forming in Corrolitos in 2005, their strange and unique blend of proggy metallic space rock has captivated the ears of adventurous music enthusiasts around the world. Getting their start playing in living rooms and dive bars around Santa Cruz, Mammatus attracted the attention of experimental taste maker Holy Mountain records who released their eponymous debut album in 2006. After multiple explorations across North America showcasing their ridiculously heavy riffs paired with harrowing widdly wah your face off guitar wankery, brain bending space trip outs, throbbing bass pummel, and cave ogre drum bashing, Mammatus left many a sore neck in their wake. Garbing themselves in bizarre floral wizard robes and waving redwood staffs foraged from Corralitos Creek, they established a cult following of rock n' roll lovers drawn to the far out spiritual vibes floating in the haze of Sabbathy riffage. In 2007 Mammatus released The Coast Explodes, a record inspired by the majestic complexity of the coastline of Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. The album garnered critical praise from outsider music freaks and is considered one of the most essential rock records of the new millennium by several people. After melting minds around America playing with Japanese psych legends Acid Mother's Temple, Mammatus decided the “wizard phase” was over and went into hiding for a while.

They emerged some time later playing a cloudy, peculiar version of progressive rock, dubbed Heady Mental. Mammatus lost themselves in the sonic explorations of the electronic fury of the mind, taking five years to complete a record that has yet to see a release date. At infrequent intervals the band would take their findings to the stage in select locations on the west coast, breaking open heads with the tingling sensations of Brain Drain, leaving mesmerized audiences charged on the power of pure rock energy. 

Currently Mammatus are interested in Post Wizard New Mage Far Out Casual. Presenting new material, they continue to push the boundaries of heavy rock music, spreading the shanga vibes and attempting to share with others the feelings they get from being overcome by crazy, hazy, heavy, far out rock and roll.
