Attivi dal 2003 i romani Doomraiser sono diventati pian piano un istituzione doom nazionale, creandosi una fedele numero di adepti che ha atteso con ansia e trepidazione il seguito dell’ottimo Reverse (Passaggio Inverso) del 2015. Cinque anni di silenzio che hanno fatto crescere l’attesa per il qui presente The Dark Side of Old Europa. Il nuovo corso, edito per Time to Kill Records, coincide anche con il disco più oscuro e maturo della loro discografia.
La prova di Nicola “Cynar” Rossi non può lasciar spazio a giudizi discordanti. Le linee vocali sono sempre ispirate. La sezione ritmica di BJ e Pinna assolutamente devastante nel tessere pazientemente attorno agli strappi della coppia di chitarre Montagna/Nantini. Le coordinate stilistiche si adagiano sul Doom classico vecchia scuola, riletto in modo egregio nell’anno domini 2020. Chimera è da brividi sin dal riffing Cadlemassiano che la percuote violentemente sino a portarla alle grida disperate di Cynar che l’accompagnano verso l’oblio. Poderosa anche la titletrack, che gira su coordinate simili ma che si regala un ritornello dal gran gusto melodico e variazioni che ricordano i migliori My Dying Bride. Tauroctony (The Secret Cult of Mithras) è il pezzo dalle tinte horror che avrebbero voluto scrivere gli ultimi Electric Wizard, mentre Terminal Dusk e Haxan sono classicamente vincenti. La conclusiva Loathsome Explorer Interpolation è un mix vincente tra My Dying Bride e Cathedral che ti attacca sin dal primo ascolto tutta la sua morbosa perversione. Questo disco dovrebbe farci capire ancora una volta che per trovare grande musica non serve per forza di cose guardare oltre i confini nostrani visti i dischi superlativi che stanno uscendo anche in questo inizio 2020.

The proof of Nicola "Cynar" Rossi cannot leave room for conflicting judgments. The vocal lines are always inspired. The rhythmic section of BJ and Pinna absolutely devastating in patiently weaving around the guitars of the pairMontagna / Nantini. The stylistic coordinates lie on the old school classic Doom, reinterpreted in an excellent way in the Anno Domini 2020. Chimera, with her Cadlemassian riffing, is absolutely creepy and Cynar's desperate cries accompany the song towards oblivion. The titletrack is also powerful, which runs on similar coordinates but offering a refrain with a great melodic taste and variations that recall the best My Dying Bride. Tauroctony (The Secret Cult of Mithras) is the horror-colored piece that the last Electric Wizard would have liked to write, while Terminal Dusk and Haxan are classically winning. The conclusive Loathsome Explorer Interpolation is a winning mix between My Dying Bride and Cathedral that attacks you from the first listening with all its morbid perversion. This record should make us understand once again that to find great music it is not necessarily necessary to look beyond our borders given the superlative records that are also coming out in this early 2020.
