GIÖBIA: Plasmatic Idol (Review)

HEAVY PSYCH

ENGLISH VERSION:
Introducing Night Sound (2013) was undoubtedly the album that made the name of Giöbia known to a wider audience; the following Magnifier (2015, published like the previous one by Sulatron Records) has consecrated the rise of the Milanese band which, with the current formation author of the two aforementioned discs, has in the meantime become one of the most appreciated names of the European heavy psych scene.
After five years of intense live activity, with participation in numerous European festivals, the time has finally come to hear what the four have given birth for the studio debut on their new label Heavy Psych Sounds.
The dreamlike atmospheres of Parhelion open, an instrumental piece that welcomes the listener by preparing the right mental setting to fully enjoy the astral journey just undertaken. We can expect everything, seen as the sparkling psych rock of the subsequent In the Dawn Light (which will make more than one Black Angels fan happy) immediately changes the cards on the table, just before the space interlude of Plasmatic Idol introduces us to the best song on this new album. Haridwar is pure west coast psychedelia, sunny and with splendid organ parts, eight minutes of pure perfection; Far Behind gives vent to the more progressive side of the band, while the proceeding and the violins of Heart of Stone make a glimpse of a Hexvessel psych folk side unknown for the band.
There are many materials cleverly handled by Giöbia in Plasmatic Idol, a kaleidoscope in which the listener will repeatedly look to discover all the fragments that compose it, remaining constantly fascinated in a different way. Probably their best album, which brings prestige not only to Italy, but to the whole European scene.
